Unexpected Emergency Room Visit

Some days just don’t go as planned.  Sometimes multiple days just don’t go as planned. Right now I think we are coming through a stretch of those unexpected days.

First – daycare transition day 1.  It went pretty well.  I told the ladies in the room that my goal was to not have Baby MPB at my side the whole time.  And well, in 3 hours he only came over to see me 2 times!  And he only cried once, when another little one accidently sat on his head – I’d cry too in that circumstance.  So, we all deemed daycare trial day 1 a success and we are going to try a full day without me next.  But while loading Baby MPB and all his stuff into the car, I slammed my finger in the car door.  I am now going to be down 1 finger nail, and it still hurts.  For the record, I’m not a fan of pain.

Second – a family trip to the children’s hospital.  While Baby MPB was playing in the bathroom during an adult bathroom visit, Baby MPB managed to break open my hairdryer.  At which time we learned it was held together by tiny industrial strength magnets!!!! The design of the stupid thing indicated there should be 4 magnets, no matter where we searched we could only find 3.  Needless to say we called poison control and were sent to the Emergency Room at the Children’s Hospital for x-rays.  None of the professionals were terribly panicked because evidently swallowing 2 magnets is super dangerous, swallowing 1 magnet is just bad.  So we were anticipating x-rays to confirm if he did swallow 1, and if he did it would be observations until it passed through him, unless it became lodged somewhere in which case he’d need surgery.  2 hours later, super wonderful nurses and doctors were able to confirm that Baby MPB DID NOT swallow the missing magnet.  Baby MPB was basically immobilized for the x-rays and he handled it really well.  The x-ray technician was very efficient, and Baby MPB didn’t cry at all.  But, I will admit that it was very hard seeing my little boy immobilized on an x-ray bed, thankfully we knew he wasn’t seriously hurt and it was precautionary. Needless to say the magnet is still missing.  The hairdryer and remaining 3 magnets are long gone in the hospital trash can.

But I’ll admit seeing Baby MPB lying there, my mind went straight back to the day my mom and sister were killed in a car accident and my dad and brother seriously hurt.  My brother was immobilized for hours upon hours due to expected back/neck/head trauma. I don’t think I’ll ever forget seeing my brother that day and listening to him talk to the nurses and me but not remembering anything (he made a full recovery).  And, seeing my Dad in a hospital bed with cuts and broken bones telling me that my mom and sister died.  Truthfully they are visons I try not to think about because it’s just too hard to let my mind go back to that day.  The things I saw that day are literally the things of nightmares, except for me they were real life.  But, seeing Baby MPB immobilized on an x-ray table put me right back in the moment but this time I couldn’t help but see my little boy being hurt.  I literally had to keep reminding myself that he’s okay and this isn’t life altering or life ending.  Parenting fears are real, and I all I can do is just hope I never, ever see my little boy seriously hurt (or worse).

  1. Congrats on surviving the first day at daycare! Although I hope your finger heals quickly.
I’m glad that your trip to the hospital ended up being precautionary and that baby MPB handled it like a champ.

    • Thanks!! I’m glad the first day went well too! And I’m really glad the hospital trip ended up being just precautionary! Really, it all could have been so much worse. 🙂

  2. Oh my goodness, I’m so glad that Baby MPB is OK! That must have been terrifying! I know that feeling of “oh my goodness, my baby looks OK, but is there a possibility I could have allowed something life-threatening to happen to him???” The answer is almost always no, but the devil is in the “almost” — glad that the hospital was able to reassure you!

I’m really glad to hear that daycare visit #1 was a success! Sounds like a great place for Baby MPB, head-sitting and all. Our daycare calls the one-year-olds the “puppy group” because they’re always in a little heap like a litter of puppies. 🙂

    • That’s the absolute worst feeling, eh? And yes, thankfully in this circumstance it turned out to be absolutely nothing. Thankfully we have x-ray technology! 🙂
And I too am glad that the daycare visit went so well! I love the description of “puppy group”, that’s exactly what it was like!! Baby MPB was right in there with all the other kids having fun, and a little girl fell in love with me and I played with her the entire time. It was a good visit for both of us, I think. 🙂

  3. I’m so glad baby is okay. I am so paranoid about batteries and magnets. Very excited that daycare went so well. I hope it continues to be a very happy thing for all of you!

    • I hear you about paranoia over magnets and batteries!! We’ve been the exact same way. But we had no idea my hair dryer was held together by magnets! Crazy, eh? He will probably never be allowed to touch another hairdryer again!! 🙂

  4. How scary! I’m so glad baby MPB is ok. I wonder where magnet #4 ended up??

Glad the daycare trial went well. I’m sure that eases your mind about him being in daycare!

    • Magnet #4 is officially a giant mystery! We’ve searched ever inch of that bathroom multiple times now. We are thinking it maybe went down the air vent. Or, maybe it was never even there in the first place? Having never broken open my hair dryer before, we really aren’t positive that it was there to begin with.
And yes, thankfully daycare trial went well!! 🙂

  5. Oh wow!! I’m sorry to hear about the ER trip and I hate that you had to see baby MPB go through that. So glad he’s okay! I can imagine that I would be walking around my house with a metal detector searching for that 4th one but perhaps it was never there to begin with.

I can see where the hospital trip would bring up memories from your past. As I read about what you witnessed the day your family was in the car crash I cried. I am so very sorry.

Also I’m really glad that daycare went well! I hope the next few times are just as great!

    • I too am so glad he is okay! (Obviously!). 🙂
We have searched and searched that entire bathroom!! And our bedroom, since it was the ensuite. We simply haven’t found it. It could have gone down the air vent, which means we’ll never see it again. Or maybe it was never there in the first place, and we have no idea since I had never bothered to break my hairdryer before to know how it went together! Needless to say, we still haven’t let Baby MPB back in that bathroom.
As always, thanks so much for your love and support. It means the world to me.

      • Since it was just magnets holding it together, we think it was probably just breaking the bond between the magnets based on how he randomly dropped it, if that makes sense? I’m still shocked that a hairdryer that we assumed was solid plastic was actually held together by magnets!

  6. How scary and stressful. I’m glad that he didn’t swallow the magnet, hope the missing one turns up so you can rest easy knowing it’s been disposed. Take care of yourself, having a traumatic flashback is extremely draining.

  7. Oh wow what a day! Thank goodness he is ok and hopefully the magnet was never even there so it can’t be found by any little fingers any time soon! I just read your post about your family, I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it must have been to see baby laid there for the x ray knowing what your family went through. He sounds like he was very brave though and so we’re you for dealing with it so well!

  8. Oh my! Glad all is well and that you recover too. Take care, having something so traumatic flash back can trigger a lot of PTSD.. Take a day off if you can, just rest it out..

  9. Yikes. I hope your finger heals quickly!! When I was 18 my family and I were on a trip home, had stopped for dinner, and upon getting in the car to head the last 3 hours home, my dad slammed 3 of my fingers in the door. We got some ice from the restaurant we had been at, but I kinda had to suck it up and deal so we could get home. Not fun…so I can sympathize!!! I’m happy that baby didn’t ingest the magnets, and hopefully you do find the missing one some time soon so you can throw it away. Really happy to hear that his first day at day care went so well though! Hopefully next time nobody sits on his head! 😀

    • We keep wondering exactly that!! I’m thinking it’s probably down the air vent. But the one thing I know is that we’ve searched high and low and it isn’t anywhere we can find it, so hopefully Baby MPB doesn’t find it!

  10. Eeeeeeep the magnet thing always freaks me out. You did the right thing. It must be so awful having those hospital memories. I can’t even imagine. I want to send you a big hug right now. x

    • I will say the one good thing about this hospital trip was that no one was dying and we knew it would be okay in the end. Focusing on that always helps me focus on the present and not the past memories.
      Thanks your support, as always!

  11. Oh brutal! If it makes you feel any better, we thought Gunnar swallowed a battery and rushed him in when he was about a year. Not fun. But you are all ok! 💙💜💙

  12. That is scary! My son managed to pull a paint brush off the counter when he was around eight months old and tried to chew it. I still have no idea how he managed to get his hands on it. It involved a very panicked phone call to poison control. Thankful all was well, but it is always scary when they do things like that!
