The Beauty of a Winter City

I am Canadian and I live in a winter city. It has been really freaking cold lately. Like -40 C (-40 F) kind of cold. (On a side note, I just realized that -40 is when Celsius and Fahrenheit are equivalent).

While I love many things about being Canadian and living in this amazing part of the world, I despise the cold. I really, truly despise being cold.  I may even go so far as to say I hate the cold.  Given how much I detest the cold, my normal approach to winter is to hide inside while pouting and complaining like a 2 year old who just had their candy taken away.

While, not yesterday.  Yesterday we had a reprieve from the cold weather so Mr. MPB and I decided to take our dog and go on a hunt to capture winter’s beauty. We smiled and laughed the afternoon and early evening away.

  1. I don’t enjoy the cold either, but it keeps the dogs clean, and is so beautiful. Wonderful pictures! I especially like the ice jam. We get those a lot here, as the temperatures can go from above zero to well below, overnight.

  2. Beautiful!!! I hate the cold too, but love looking at snow. I always say it can snow as long as it’s my day off of work so I don’t have to go out in it lol!!!

  4. Great pictures! I hate the cold too, but it’s funny – hubby and I did this winter snowshoe hike in the Rocky’s while we were out in Colorado for treatment, and it was one of my favorite experienced ever. Frozen lakes, winter birds, evergreen trees. It was all so wonderful.

    • A winter snowshoe hike sounds beautiful! Mr. MPB is always trying to get me to go snowshoeing in the Rocky’s, I just have no interest. Maybe this year, now that we are no longer living with high risk pregnancies, I’ll go with him. The picture you painted of the frozen lakes, winter birds, evergreen trees does sound worth it.

  5. Gorgeous! I’ve lived in Florida my entire life and am always fascinated by seasons, most particularly fall and winter. We only have summer and less intense summer where I live. I’d love to experience a white Christmas!

    • Thank you! Somehow spending time looking for beauty in this weather makes the cold a bit more tolerable.
Oh, what I’d give for 2 seasons – summer and less intense summer. That just sounds delightful to me! 🙂

  6. Seriously…I want to come and meet you and Mr. MPB and learn how to cook fancier meals and to learn photography. I used to love winter but as I get older I’d like it from about the week before Christmas to the week after and then I’m good, lol. Unfortunately, as probably is the same for you, we can have snow into April and probably much more rarely, May.

    • You are welcome to visit anytime!! And I’ll keep you posted if we ever pass through your state. 🙂
And I agree, winter is over rated. I could go with 2 weeks of winter and sunshine the rest of the year! We usually get snow from September/October to May. 😦

  7. So beautiful! I don’t miss that kind of cold at all, but the beauty that lingers after the cold is something I miss very much! You captured it perfectly hon.

    • The brutal cold is just cruel, but you are right the beauty of a cold day is remarkable. Maybe one of these days I’ll venture out when it is -40 to get some nice shots…or maybe not.

  8. I also hate the cold. HATE. Though I don’t live in CA, I also don’t live in the sunny warm parts of the US. The only way I’ve been able to cope with it is (this will shock you) making a point of being outdoors. It reminds me how beautiful the cold is. Since I started running in the winter, I’ve definitely been a lot less angsty about it.

So pile on those layers and get outside!

    • Haha, I guess not all American’s cal live in CA.
I do understand what you mean about making a point of being outside. I’m bad at it as I tend to hibernate, but I always feel really good after spending time outdoors.

    • Ha! We heat our homes with natural gas. Some modern homes have fire places (wood or natural gas). But, we definitely do not rely on fire places or electricity to heat our homes through the winter. 🙂

  9. My favorite thing about living in the northeast is that we get every season…Winter is my favorite because of all of the beauty that you captured above…it makes me happy to see this pcitures, but then again it might just be because I get to cuddle up with Callie and she stands a little closer and holds me tighter when we walk outside 🙂 . Winter does this thing with symmetry that’s really awesome too…love the shot of the barn…

  10. Beautiful pics! I will definitely go as far as to say that I hate the cold. -40 degrees, holy crap! What kind of outerwear do you even wear for that? I live in Philadelphia and it never even gets even close to that cold, but I am still a mopey jerk all winter long. I dream of moving back to Florida (I lived there for grad school and it was heaven). All that said, winter nature can be stunning and I’m glad you guys found an afternoon to enjoy it!

    • You are right, winter nature can be very beautiful.
As for the clothing on really cold days, honestly, we just avoid going outside – no dog walks, and only short trips to the car if we absolutely have to go out. So long as we aren’t leaving the city, I just wear normal people boots and my ski jacket with mittens. And of course depending on how much I like my hair that day I may throw a toque on. (Toque is the Canadian word for winter hat, just in case that made no sense).

  11. Very beautiful pictures! I am not a fan of the cold (funny, since I figure skated for 10+ years), bring on the sunshine for me! But it does have a certain peace, stillness and beauty to it. I’m glad I live somewhere that experiences all four seasons though.

  12. OH MY!!! I LOVE these pictures. I can’t believe I missed this post. I am the opposite to you, I hate the heat and would love to live in a place that was really cold again. I get so homesick this time of year because while we are trying to keep our dignity in as little clothing as possible the northern hemisphere is bunking down for the winter. I’d give anything to hear the crunch of snow beneath my feet and to have to wrap up warm. Enjoy it and please keep taking photos x
