My Not So Happy Day

So, I’m having a bad day.

Why?  Because my basement looks like this:

20150719 - My Not So Happy Day

After just surviving a basement flood that destroyed most of our basement, the sight of water in our basement bathroom (the only room that wasn’t damaged in the flood) had us panicking.  It turns out the water line to our fridge failed and water began to pool in a heating duct in our basement ceiling.  Once we noticed the damage we quickly turned off the water and ripped into the roof, removed the water and now we have fans running to dry out the areas we cannot reach.  We will re-run the water line one night this week and we will repair the damaged ceiling within a week or two if all goes according to plan, hopefully all for less then $500.

And most importantly. thankfully, we noticed it before the new carpet or drywall that was just installed was destroyed.  In fact, the damage is pretty minimal in the scheme of what could have been. And so this is the silver lining, and we are thankful!

That said, I hope I never see water on my basement floor again!!

So, because I’ve thrown myself a pity party and been somewhat grouchy all day today, I decided now would be a good time to share a few photos from our last week. For those who haven’t already figured it out, I can be a bit neurotic.  I realized that I finished my 365 days of happy on the assumption that I didn’t screw up my numbering anywhere.  So, just to be safe I took a few extra days of photos, because honestly what would a 365 days of happy photos album look like if I accidentally miscounted and ended up with 361 days of happy?  Oh, I’d be mad!

So, here are my last few extra happy moments.  I promise, these are the last of them. I will still take photos, I will still share photos sometimes, but these are the last official happy moment photos.

Extra Day 1: Who Doesn’t love playing with a top spin?

Extra Day 2: I joined a local vegetable co-op this summer.  A very hippy thing for us, but I thought it sounded like a wonderful idea – local, organic veggies that I pick up once a week for the same price as the veggies I would buy at the grocery store.  The only catch is that I have no idea what I will get each week.  This was the first week, and much to my surprise they included these beautiful flowers!  Needless to say, I’m excited for the next 16 weeks!

Extra Day 3: My favourite summer dress came out to enjoy a beautiful day.

Extra Day 4: Camping in the mountains again this weekend!  We arrived in the pouring rain so tonight’s even snack was fresh peas in the pod while curled up in bed.

Extra Day 5: River fishing!!  We had a blast as we avoided the rain until the end of the day, and even caught a few fish.

Extra Day 6: A stop at the Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that neither of us had visited before.  We had a wonderful time exploring the site and wondering through the museum.

  1. What??? Again? That’s crazy. I am so glad you got it under control, but enough is enough. Glad you show some happy moments though! Love those flowers!

    • Yup, that’s pretty much the exact words that came out of our mouths! We were not happy, and in fact, we still aren’t!
Oh, and I love the flowers too. 🙂

    • Ya, we’ve had enough of water in our house lately! Neither of us were happy to discover yet another surprise home reno and neither of us are excited to be inside fixing our house during our few short months of summer.
And thanks, I decided I needed a dose of happiness last night and thought I might as well share the photos with everyone too. 🙂

      • Gosh that’s such a pain!!!! You must be raging! I would be so frustrated! But if you look at it like this is the bad thing, then that means you’re in for all good stuff! Law of probabilities! 🙂

      • Raging is a good word for how we both felt yesterday!! And so is frustrated!
I like your approach, come on good stuff, we are ready for you! 🙂

      • Yeah, it’s definitely laws of averages so this means you’re one step further towards your perfect match, I reckon! 🙂

    • Thank you! We really do live in a beautiful part of the world, which makes taking photos pretty darn easy. I know we are pretty fortunate to be able to play in the rocky mountains on an almost weekly basis. 🙂

  2. Ugh! Finding water leaks in the house is the worst feeling!! Glad you caught it before it made a bigger problem. Love the happy moment pics!

    • The absolute worst! I’m just thankful we found it so quickly, I could not imagine having to call insurance again this quickly, our rates would have skyrocketed!

  3. Ugh. Just ugh. I’m glad that the damage isn’t too extensive, but I’m sure you’d rather be playing in the mountains than dealing with this water damage. I hope it all dries up nice, and that it’s all very quickly and easily fixable.

    • Ugh is a very polite word for what we were saying all day yesterday!! 🙂
We had fun plans for our day yesterday, so neither of us were very happy when we had to immediately change gears. And now we are dreading having to likely spend one of our few precious summer weekends inside repairing everything. But, I guess it could have been worse so we are just going to focus on that.

  4. I saw that pic on instagram, that made me so sad for you guys! What a pain. I am so so sorry that you have to deal with this! Our fridge water line started leaking a while back, thankfully we caught it early, but we haven’t fixed it yet – so it’s just been shut off for months…. I’m ready to have it back!! hmph. HUGS! love the extra happy days 🙂

    • Thanks Mrs. Brooks! After 5 trips to 3 different home reno stores yesterday we decided that we clearly have a unique fridge and ended up just turning the water off too! And after 2 specialty plumbing stores this morning, Mr. MPB finally found the part we need and we know understand the leak because the previous owners just used standards parts which don’t fit our fridge! I’ll never understand why people cut corners.
Anyways, hopefully now we can run a new line, with a new part sooner rather then later. Or else, we will be just like you with the feature shut off for months. And part of me suspects we may have a hole in our roof for a little while as neither of us are very excited to patch it. 🙂
