Fired, Technology, House Guests and Colonoscopies

What a week it’s been….and it’s only Tuesday….

We fired our new nanny last night.  Although she was very nice, after losing the house key and then missing multiple days of work we decided she was a combination of unreliable and flaky.  In fact, she has managed to miss 1/3 of her scheduled work days in 2 weeks of employment – not a good record.  And, honestly, it just wasn’t working for us professionally – we hired her 3 days per week which would enable us to both work 3 solid days a week – when she didn’t show up that forced us both to lose productivity time.

But more important this nanny was not a caregiver that we deemed good enough for Baby MPB – as far as we are concerned he deserves the absolute best.  We are paying a lot of money to have an in-home nanny, so we expect them to show up.  We expect them to want to take care of our son.  We expect them to be responsible.  We expect them to demonstrate trustworthiness in their behaviour.  She wasn’t demonstrating these traits and so she’s done.  Part of me feels bad for her, but truthfully, the mamma bear in me doesn’t really care.  Honestly, my son is my one and only priority and it’s not my job to teach her about being trustworthy and responsible.

Which now means we are without help for the foreseeable future.  So, we are now back to the drawing board and desperately hoping we find someone very quickly.

.

I hate technology sometimes – my brand new laptop, it’s dead. At a meeting yesterday I discovered it wouldn’t turn on, I had my clients IT department look at it and they confirmed that I bought a lemon.  Great, exactly what we need to deal with today.  Thankfully it happened yesterday as today is the last day to return it.  So, Mr. MPB is at the store as I type sorting this out.  So today will be spent re-loading everything during nap times.  Another lost work day.

.

We have unexpected house guest.  A family member is going through a crisis and they have asked to stay with us sporadically throughout the next few weeks (or more) when they are in town for medical appointments.  Of course we said yes.  But, honestly, I can barely handle the idea of hosting right now, and hosting without a schedule is not my idea of fun.  But alas, we will make it work.

.

Oh and to make this week extra fun, Friday I have a colonoscopy.  My family has a history of colon cancer and 5 years ago I had a pre-cancerous polyp removed.  So, I’m on a 5 year recall – it’s a good thing, I’m 100% about preventative cancer screening.  Honestly, it’s not a big deal and doesn’t cause me any worry, but it means 2 days this week are going to be unpleasant as my body prep’s for the procedure.

Seriously, we just need this week to be over!

  1. Normally, I hit “like” on your posts but I can’t do it on this one because that’s a whole heck of a lot of bad luck. I’m sorry about the nanny…I wish you guys could just find someone amazing who will make a long term commitment but I suppose that’s harder to find when it’s a part time job. Hoping this computer does what it’s supposed to, that the visiting relative doesn’t wreck to much havoc on your schedules/life and that everything goes well with the colonoscopy! Sending you much love and big hugs!!!

    • Yup a whole heck of a lot bad luck!! We will survive it all, because we always do. But honestly I’m exhausted just thinking about this week.
And I agree, I think a large part of our nanny problem is the result of our part-time need. We are actually now starting to look into a day home situation because even though I’m not ready for it, i think it’ll be more reliable and socialization for baby MPB is a good thing.

  2. Wow what a random blog post title I thought they may all be related…hehe!! I’m sorry things didn’t work out with the nanny. I can’t understand the poor commitment thing especially when starting a new job, why wouldn’t anyone want to make a good impression???!! I guess not everyone has good work ethics 😔 Did she have good references? I hope you find another one soon, you really have had some bad luck ☹️
Good luck for your colonoscopy, even if you have done it before it must be a pretty scary thing to go through?

  3. Argh! I feel a tiny bit of what you feel… My new guy quit after four weeks of doing no work and left us in a fix with the client. I was half glad to lose him as he was completely incompetent but annoyed to have to find a replacement! It must be magnified a million times for your darling child! Ah well, onwards and upwards. Good luck with your colonoscopy… It doesn’t sound fun although a friend of mine has regular ones due to a condition and says it’s not so bad other than the embarrassment!

  4. I would have let the nanny go, too. For any job, at a minimum, you need to show up to work each day, on time. I would set the bar much higher for someone caring for my child.

  5. What you’re going through with nannies is what we feared and drove us to choose a good center instead. Is there a reason you’re not considering a daycare center?

Good luck with the colonoscopy and with the house guest. Neither of those are on my list of fun things to do.

    • Day cares here usually don’t start accepting kids until they 1 year old because the standard maternity/paternity leave is 1 year. So finding spots for kids under 1 year is really hard if not impossible. We have already started to look for a care centre starting when he turns 1 – I’m so done with unreliable nannies!!

  6. Ugh, I’m so sorry about the nanny. You made the right decision in firing her. I hope you find someone else soon who works out for your family. And your laptop! Damn, when it rains, it pours! I really feel for you – you’re going through the ringer. And a houseguest on top of it?! Good grief.

Your break/easier days will come…very soon!

    • Thanks Lindsay! I appreciate you reinforcing our decision because I know you understand just how important quality child care is!
My break is coming on the weekend….I’m making it! I think another trip to the mountains might be in order. 😊

  7. Well that’s a crap week. I’m having one of those too. Apparently Mercury is in retrograde or something. I don’t really have any idea what that means except that shit things are supposed to happen when it is taking place and shit things seem to be happening…! Hope it improves for you next week xx

    • Mercury must be in retrograde! Or something like that because I also have no idea what that really means. It seems like a bunch of us are having a rough week – hopefully next week will be much better for all of us!

  8. Yikes. I’m not liking this post!! I’m having a rough week as well…overall anyway. I’m really bummed for you that the new nanny didn’t work out. I truly wish you luck on finding someone great very soon!! I can just imagine how stressful that makes everything. And your laptop…I would have thrown that thing! How frustrating!! Good luck with your house guest, and your procedure Friday. Hopefully next week will be better for you!

      • I shouldn’t complain really…mine is mostly work frustration, foot pain, and feeling tired. But right now that’s a horrible trifecta for me, and it’s draining. BUT overall I’m doing well, baby is well, and I shouldn’t really worry about anything else. But I will say this…I’m BEYOND THANKFUL that I do NOT have to work tomorrow!!!

      • I just worked 6 in a row. They were all doozies. I almost called out today because I really just didn’t think I could do it again!

  9. All of that will be resolved (although i understand your frustration) and will be called yesterday.
1.Thank God that nanny didnt hurt the baby since she is so unreliable.
    2. The laptop is under the warranty, so it malfunctioned at the right time.
    3. Thank God you have an access to good doctors and i think you will get anaesthesia while under the procedure. In some countries, it is just a dream and people suffer from it.
    4. Helping those in needs will be rewarding, sooner or later. You opened your home to them at the time of need and they will be fine. Dont think you have to arrange things to be a perfect hostess. You are a working lady and 24/7 mum.

    Just breathe….:)
